March Madness

Friday, April 3rd, 2009 | Random Thoughts

Whew!  What a month!  It’s the first month I didn’t get a single post up on my blog.  I’m trying not to feel too guilty about it.  The past month has been crazy!  Where do I begin?…Marathon Training

Nate and I have been running A LOT lately.  Last year we ran 3 days during the week and once on the weekend.  We decided this year to run twice on the weekend and 3 times during the week.  We are up to 6 or 7 miles for our base runs and 13 miles for our long runs.  This has been the highlight of my month.  I absolutely *love* running!  I get lost in my thoughts or music and can’t get enough.  Whether it’s praise music with Tommy or a good (loud) set of John Mayer, I feel renewed.  My body feels strong and my soul feels refreshed.  It’s been fun running with Nate right next to me.  We don’t talk a whole lot, but there’s something so special about that time together.

Work (School)

This has been an emotionally heavy month.  The first round of “pink slips” came out at the beginning of the month (thankfully I didn’t get one this year!).  In support of my collegues, I attended the first  two hours of a school board meeting on the 10th.  I gave a presentation at the PTSA meeting on the 19th, ran in the jog-a-thon on the 27th, and will continue putting together our Career Day Field Trip over Spring Break.  I called the Department of Child and Family Services this afternoon regarding a potential “neglect” issue, and continue to mentor and teach my precious kids every day.  I’ve definitely gone a little overboard this year.  This group of students is quite something.  They take more emotional energy than I have ever had to give before.  It’s been rather discouraging over the quarter, but I continue to press on.  I know God has me here in Room 303 each day to love on my students.  He certainly gives me the strength to handle everything that comes my way.

Work (Compton)

I have been co-teaching a group of teachers in Compton Unified School District over the past several months (for the Intro to Algebra Program).  The sessions are once or twice a month on a Saturday.  I have to say, working 6 days a week is not something I truly enjoy doing, but I have enjoyed the experience.  Many of the teachers are challenging (just like my students), but some of them are true angels.  I have been challenged and “told” a few times, but if I just think of them as big 8th graders, I don’t take it too personally.  I feel bad for some of the students in the district.  Their teachers are so overworked and not always eager to teach them.  It has made me extremely grateful for my district, school, and position.

Family Life

My mom had a knee replacement the last Friday in February.  We’ve made the long drive out to Rialto a couple of times.  She’s doing pretty well!  My dad is almost done with his degree completion program.  Fourteen months and a 70-page paper…whew!  I can’t wait to celebrate at his graduation next month.  My niece turned 1 year old in March.  That Sophie!  She’s grown so fast.  She’s a lot different from Sydney.  I think she and I will be pretty close in a few years.  She seems to get overwhelmed by a lot of people and action.  We’re the introverts of the family.  I can’t wait to see how her little personality  develops.

Facebook

Finally, I’m embarrassed to say…I’ve gotten wrapped up in Facebook.  I don’t take any of the silly little quizzes or send anyone “wall bling,” but it’s definitely been fun peeking into the daily lives of friends and family.  Between my Nintendo DS and Facebook application on the ipod touch, I am able to squeeze in a little relaxation time most evenings.

To my friends who have made it to the end of this very long update…blessings on you!  It’s been quite a month.  I’ve written a few posts in my head during our long runs over the last few weekends, but by the time I got home, I was too exhausted to type!  I hope to get a few more of my thoughts out over the next two weeks…it’s finally Spring Break!!
